Description: DepartmentStudent SenatePrimary CampusUniversity of Kansas Lawrence CampusJob Description20% – Serve as a political liaison to the Student Body President, the Student Executive Committee, and the Student Senate on community, state, and national issues.
20% – Plan the Holidays and Higher Ed networking event in November or December for students to get connected with the KU administration, as well as local and state leaders.
20% – Attend legislative and policy-making functions of the following bodies, including, but not limited to, the Board of Regents, Governor of Kansas, the Kansas Legislature, the United States Congress, the Lawrence City Commission meetings, community and campus activist groups gatherings for the purpose of gathering information.
15% – Formulate a legislative agenda for the Kansas Board of Regents Higher Education Day and Big XII on the Hill in Washington, D.C.
15% – Direct and organize nonpartisan political education of the student body, by means including, but not limited to, candidate debates, voter registration efforts, get-out the-vote drives, voter guides, and policy forums.
5% – Relay relevant information obtained from legislative and policy-making functions that is of importance to students to the Student’s Assembly by placing such items on the Issues Agenda of a Student’s Assembly meeting.

  • During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Advertised Salary Range$10.50 per hour.Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with Student Senate.

As one of higher education’s finest models of self-governance, 65 senators and 10 executive staff members work together to allocate about $25 million in student fees in ways that best serve students.
